8:37 pm - Le plat pays
just coming back from flittertage in het vlakke land, mijn vlaanderen land.

will upload pix from Le plat pays as Brel must have had in mind (which we only found the very last day, in West-Vlaanderen...just moments ago I watched my newly acquired Brel video and showed Brel reciting, yes reciting, Le plat pays while showing exactly -I wish to think- the road we drove on, with the crooked trees...
too lazy/hungry to upload that now,

but this one is too good:
this can only be found in Belgium!!!!!

http://www.xs4all.nl/~renebos/smokkelroute.jpg

"smokkelroute" !!!!!!!!!

we laughed and laughed, and only on the pic we discovered a second "only in Belgium" thing on it

I like it when prejudices get confirmed :-)
We Dutch really love you Belgiums for those, hmm, idiosyncraties or whatever that Hammillian word was :-)

current mood: hungry

9:05 pm - The Train and The Fly
Today (talking during our 3 o'clock tea-break about the Natiomale Wetenschapsquiz) my boss came up with his fave:

A train travels from A to B with the speed of 100 km/h
A fly travels at the same time the exact journey but from B to A with the speed of 5 km/h, so in the opposite direction.
Obviously, at some point the fly crashes on to the train (and probably dies). Obviously after the crash the fly also travels with a speed of 100 km/h from A to B.

But, since the fly was first travelling with a speed of 5 from B to A, and after the crash with a speed of a 100 from A to B, clearly at one -small- moment in time the fly must have had a speed of 0.
(one can't go from minus 5 to plus 100 without going through 0).

Clearly, this moment is after the crash, and at that point in time the fly is STUCK to the train.

BUT: if the fly had at that (small) time a speed of zero also the train must have had speed zero since the fly is stuck to the train, so the fly and train must have the very same speed.

So - albeit for a very small moment- the train also must have had a speed zero, i.e. stands still....

RIGHT OR WRONG!
or rather, why don't we passengers notice it when the train is hit by a fly????

A CD for the best -and more or less right- answer~!!!!

ps:
during our break, 10 minutes brainstorming amongst highly educated (beta!) people, all proposed explanations were definitely wrong, including my first ("it's just an infinitely small period of time the fly has this speed, so it's a so-called singularity, and therefore the train's speed is zero only at this infinitely small period of time i.e. for zero seconds..."
sounds maybe smart to a non-Beta, but, there is a much much better explanation....)

so keep them coming!!

7:25 pm - Lord of the Rings
read in the review of the movie today:

if one at age 15 did not think Lord of the Rings is the best book ever written, one has "one screw loose"

if one at age 50 still thinks Lord of the Rings is the best book ever written, one definitely has "one screw loose" *g*

I can't judge, since I never read the book, for reasons all too obvious ;-)
The movie, however, got a real good review. So ....

current mood: artistic

8:41 am - the show
well, hmm, I missed a real live feel. Was more a video-clip imo. And Nick's voice was pretty way down in the -smooth- mix.
Of course pretty good stuff anyhows :-)

-and I was not 100% fit when I watched it, so maybe the aspirin drugged me too much.

current mood: not fit; yet anxious

2:05 pm - Cave

8:56 pm - small but ...
small but significant update on my homepage:

anette's records/CD collection

http://www.xs4all.nl/~renebos

the text/html version is just a few weeks old; the to be downloaded xls file is accurate dd 9th december 2001....

MAJOR task for X-mas holidays: a joint system / file....

the file is in fact the easiest, but, surely we will remain to struggle with:
A. liking the system of Cave, Nick and the Bad Seeds
and R. preferring the system Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds along with invisable "sorting-dummy" CAVE

both aiming at "to be listed under "C" ("ave").

maybe this is a male/female logical/il(l)logical thing.
if so, there's no sense argueing is there? :-)

seriously: routines/macro's/tips to automize this all highly welcomed!!

5:34 pm - Andermans Veren
In the plane I read that I just missed one my fave programs on TV "Andermans Veren", Dutch Cabaret, and that episode had as theme Dutch-German relationships: a fave topic: the hate/love vs indifference relationship between the Calimero-Dutch and the Hlzenbein-Germans.

http://www.omroep.nl/avro/andermansveren/

there's a rerun next Wednesday!!! Don't miss it! (but I'll tape it).

hmm, the Jiskefet "...schnitzel"-clip they will show could be a little harsh for our German spouses :-)
but Van Veen is even more world-famous-in-Germany than he is in Holland, so guess that'll be either soft or looking from the "other side".

11:46 am - wetenschapsquiz
here is the anual quiz
(dutch, but science is borderless isn't it).

The wine question is too simple isn't it?

http://www.nwo.nl/nwohome.nsf/pages/NWOP_54NELY?OpenDocument

one intruiging one: "what's the rumbling noise one hears when it's quiet and you put your fingers into your ears...hmm, answer number c) can't be right....

lol: "do fish pee ?" is a good one and "the walking in the rain" is classic (but forgot the right answer, but I think it was answer a) (vague remember ~15 km/h is optimal).

at least I've got something to do on the 10 hour flight tommorrow!

7:15 pm - random
random, effectively useless, info i heard on the radio driving to work today:

- on the plane that crashed in Queens,NY two days ago, there was a woman -a WTC employee- who survived WTC 11-9. Now she's dead....because she fled the place.

- the website/domain "Bin Laden" (don't have the exact url) was aquired by a Soedi on *exactly* the 11-9, *exactly* the date that domain name -owned by aledgedly Bin Laden "affiliates"- expired......

considering the Radio 1 source: this is not a Nostrademus / "Broodje Aap" !
but, even it's no Broodje Aap, it's not much in itself is it, really?

this brings me to

deja vu.....

also, on the way back from TT (Tina/Trier) to good old A'dam there was a radio-interview with a memory expert. He recalled the romantic, first, albeit wrong, scientific theory on deja vu's ....

in which the people had two, separate, brain parts:the left and right part. Functioning separately from each other. Normally, in that theory, the one part was responsible for the one, the other for the other type of occurrances. A deja vu, in that theory, occurred these when a) both parts of the brain "observes it" and b) there's a minor time delay between the two parts observing the very same occurance.

.....

romantic!
simple!!
incorrect !!!

7:44 am - virus
for the first time in my home computing years I've caught a virus.

it seemed to be dancing icons virus, but I guess not.
my virusscanner didn't detect it.
then downloaded another (30 free trial) fsecure scanner.
That one was busy for x hours (I put it on @ 8 pm. When I went to sleep it was still scanning.
This morning it had finished: no viruses detected....

I then got the latest xs4all scanner and at least that one found -as i write- 24 infected files which it cleaned.
the icons still annoyingly dance however....

and my website http://www.xs4all.nl/~renebos seemed screwed up again as well.

ah well.

current mood: annoyed
